Mount Jefferson Wilderness, Oregon

Scorecard

It is the head of every wilderness management unit that sets the tone for how the lands under their care is managed.  These are the leaders making decisions about environmental issues, the quality of your wilderness experience and how these lands will welcome visitors in the future.  The NPS Park Superintendent, the USDA Forest Supervisor, the BLM Area Manager have the ability to manage under strict accordance with the Wilderness Act or use their administrative authority to allow the slow degradation of the visitors wilderness experience.  It is because of the huge degree of power entrusted to these managers that Wilderness Report believes public feedback on on their performance is crucial.

Objective

Wilderness Report believes that only by providing feedback to wilderness managers can we can foster development of a set of "best practices" that will protect wilderness from the encroachment of modern culture.  Through recognizing management excellence and supporting managers who make difficult decisions to protect wilderness values despite political or budgetary pressures we hope to promote a willingness to manage wilderness in a manner compatible with wilderness values.

Process

At the end of each year Wilderness Report will grade wilderness managers on their success in protecting the wilderness values of the lands entrusted to their care.  Annual Scorecard's will use all Issue Reports and Trip Reports submitted during the year to calculate an annual grade in a variety of categories.  Using a weighted process, each year's Annual Scorecard will be combined with scorecards from previous years to calculate an aggregate grade for each manger.  When an existing manager transitions to management responsibility at another wilderness area their existing grade will follow them.  When a new manager is assigned to a wilderness area a grade will be calculated for that manager.
